COUNTDOWN: 99 Days until 2014 Massillon Tiger Football Season

It's here!!! The countdown to the 2014 Massillon Tiger Football Season.  We are inside 100 days until the kickoff of the 2014 season and to celebrate, Massillon Proud will run a feature every day for the next 99 days.

Each feature will include:
1. A former Massillon Tiger who wore the number of the current day.  A short story and/or where are they now blog.
2. A short story about something signifigant that happened "X" amount of years ago to correlate with the number of the day
3. A short story to reference the year as it correlates with the number of the day.
4. Anything else fun I decide to share in regards to the number of the day.

So without further delay, let's begin the countdown at 99

Just about every year the Massillon Tiger football team has a player who wears the number 99.  However, in 1999 #99 was a recognizable force on the defensive line for the Massillon Tigers.  Ellery Moore was one of three captains on the 1999 Massillon Tiger team that finished the regular season UNDEFEATED at 10-0 with notable wins coming against Massillon Perry, Lakewood St. Edward and Canton McKinley.  Ellery Moore was named 1st Team All-Ohio and would accept an offer to play collegiately at the University of Kentucky.

While at the University of Kentucky Ellery Moore recorded 89 tackles and 5 sacks in two active seasons (2003/2004)

Moore tried to latch on in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals but his NFL dream would fall short.

Moore continues to be involved in the game of football playing in organized leagues in Kentucky and leading and motivating young men at football camps.

Read this great article about a recent football camp Ellery appeared at.

CAPTAIN: 1915 - Paul Houriet

In 1915 Massillon Tiger football was still in its infancy, but was nothing short of amazingly dominant.  In 1915 the Massillon Tigers surrendered only 7 points during the season and those 7 points were enough to give the Tigers their only loss of the season.  Head Coach John Snavely led the Massillon Tigers to an 8-1 season.

Massillon's only loss in 1915 came at the hands of Canton Central.  Here is an excerpt from the story of the game...
"Shorn of its visions of champion hip honors stands the orange and black clad eleven of Massillon high school today. For Saturday Canton – the local school's arch foe – in the most amazing and unexpected turn of events ever witnessed in a gridiron struggle, defeated the prize aggregation of Massillon high 7 to 6, in the annual grid fracas on the driving park field. It was Massillon's first defeat.
The deciding play of the game which meant victory for the determined red and black warriors from the east end city came with such abrupt suddenness that it fairly took the breath away from the some odd 3,000 fans who witnessed the season's classic.
Canton's touchdown came in the second quarter after Massillon, by a series of brilliant end runs, had advanced the ball from midfield to Canton's seven yard line. It was second down with but two feet to go for another first down. Then came the play which gave Canton its chance to score. Instead of trying to pierce Canton's line or skirt its ends, Massillon attempted a forward pass which was blocked, the ball falling into the hands of Right End Negley, of Canton, who raced 88 yards to the goal line, making the first points scored against the local team this fall. Fisher kicked goal."

An Undefeated season, the first since 1982 was short lived due to the unexpected blow out by Massillon Perry at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in the first round of the playoffs.  The 1999 season while exciting will be best known for "Go Tigers" the movie, the Jessie Scott recruiting case and a playoff failure vs. Perry
